We all know that donating blood is so important, you could literally save up to 4 people’s lives with just one donation, but so many people are unaware of how easy it is to do, or hear rumors and get put off trying. So let’s set things straight here, donating blood in the UAE is actually very straightforward. – Those old rumors about not being able to donate if you have lived in the UK or Europe in the 1980s are not true, you CAN now donate blood as long as you haven’t had a blood transfusion back then. – Mother’s can not donate platelets specifically but can still donate whole blood or red cells. – ALL blood types are welcomed and needed. Stocks get very low around Ramadan each year so if you only want to donate once a year, please make an effort to go around then. Dubai The Dubai Blood Donation Centre (DBDC) by the Dubai Health Authority is one of the main and probably the most well known centers in the country. It is the one responsible for regulating and maintaining the blood supply to all DHA hospitals and even the private hospitals in Dubai. Opening times: DBDC is open Sunday through to Thursday from 7:30am to 7pm. Location: Latifa Women and Children Hospital, Oud Metha Road. Contact: 800DHA / 800342 The whole process takes from 30 to 50 minutes start to finish, this can be a little longer depending on the type of donation you are giving. To save time you can choose to complete the Dammi survey on the app (this must be done the same day of donation though) and they’ll scan your Emirates ID, do a quick health check and fast track you onto the donation room. Abu Dhabi Abu Dhabi Blood Bank is the supplier of blood to a majority of Abu Dhabi hospitals as well as Sheikh Khalifa Medical City. Opening times: Sunday to Thursday from 7am to 10pm, Saturdays from 7am to 3pm. Location: Khalidia, Abu Dhabi City Contact: 800 8722 Al Ain Al Ain Regional Blood Bank is managed by Al Tawam Hospital but it also supplies other Al Ain hospitals. Opening times: Sunday to Thursday from 8am to 10pm, Saturdays from 10am to 6pm. Location: Al Mu’tarid Civic Center Contact: 800 8722 Sharjah Sharjah Blood Transfusion and Research Center is actually one of the top blood donation centers in the UAE. With many awards under their belts, they work along with WHO in the field of research on transfusions and medicine. Opening times: Sunday to Thursday from 7:30am to 3:30pm, Saturdays from 8am to 1:30pm. Location: Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Rd, Industrial Area, Muwailah Commercial.
